Biography

Apprenticed to a decorator, he entered the École des arts décoratifs in 1887, left after a year following a disagreement with his teacher, then received private tuition from the landscape painter Fernand Quignon. He discovered Pont-Aven in 1890 and worked there regularly. After a brief pointillist phase he developed his personal “trellis” technique of crosshatched strokes. He exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants from 1893.

Giverny

His presence in the Eure valley is attested by one work, “L’Eure en hiver”, held at the Musée d’Orsay. The detail of his Norman stays could not be established, and no source connects him to Giverny: the link is one of subject, not of biography.
