The dark wooden counter, the bottles on the shelf, a door open onto the light: the interior of the house itself, painted by its most faithful lodger. Provenance: Baudy-Suze collection, then to the present owner through successive transfers.
   • Giverny Dawson Dawson-Watson oil on canvas, 1888, signed and dated at lower right. A dirt lane between the white walls of the village, a woman carrying two baskets, tiled roofs and the hillside beyond. It is the view the lodgers had on leaving the hotel.
   • Suzanne Hoschedé au lapin Theodore Earl Butler pastel, 1891, private collection. Suzanne Hoschedé holds a young rabbit against her; the sheet bears a dedication, “Mon amie Mme Baudy”. Butler married Suzanne the following year.
