Biography

He met Charles-François Daubigny around 1855 and became his pupil from 1858, spending summers aboard the Botin, the master’s studio-boat; he also trained under Corot. He kept Daubigny’s subjects — riverbanks, skies, waterside villages — but treated them with a lighter palette and a freer touch. First medal at the Salon in 1884, honourable mention at the 1889 Exposition Universelle.

Giverny

His documented working places are Ville-d’Avray, Auvers-sur-Oise, Bois-le-Roi and the banks of the Seine at Boissise-la-Bertrand. No source connects him to Giverny. The art market offers canvases titled “Notre-Dame-de-l’Isle”, a commune of the Eure near Vernon, which would suggest that he worked in the area: the lead is unverified.
