Biography
Thomas Buford Meteyard was born at Rock Island, Illinois, in 1865. He lived on both sides of the Atlantic — England, France, Massachusetts, Switzerland — and became close to Edvard Munch and Stéphane Mallarmé. His death date is unsettled: the National Gallery of Art gives 1928, the Metropolitan Museum gives 1950, at Glion in the canton of Vaud. This site gives 1928 without considering the matter closed. His death, long given as either 1928 or 1950, is settled by Carol Lowrey: 1928, at Territet, Switzerland.
Giverny
Between 1890 and 1893 he often worked at Giverny, where he was John Leslie Breck’s friend, and painted like him a series of haystacks after Monet. He stands out for the variations of light at night: he is one of the few painters of the colony to have worked after sunset.
Relation with the Hôtel Baudy
Four stays, one of them a whole winter. 21 to 31 July 1891. Then 5 September 1891 to 20 February 1892 — five and a half months, through the bad season. 20 April to 8 September 1892. And 22 April to 23 June 1893.
