Biography

Trained at the Mark Hopkins Institute School of Fine Arts in San Francisco and then at the Académie Julian in Paris from 1888, he became a regular illustrator for Scribner’s Magazine and an author-illustrator of travel books. Elected to the National Academy of Design in 1909, he was an official war artist with the American army in spring 1918, then director of the Paris Art Training Center. From 1923 he headed the mural painting department of the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design in New York.

Giverny

He lived in France from 1888 to 1914, with a two-year interruption in New York. He was a friend of Theodore Robinson, a central figure of the colony.

Relation with the Hôtel Baudy

Seven entries under his name, from September 1889 to 1894, and three other Peixottos with him — A., J. S., and Florian. The register gives his age in turn as twenty-three, twenty-six, twenty, twenty-one, and has him born now in California, now in Chicago, now in San Francisco. Carol Lowrey warns that the ages and places in the register are often wrong: the Peixotto family proves it.

Principal works

Under the trees (no established title) oil on canvas, signed lower left, the signature illegible at the resolution available to us. A screen of pale-trunked, pollarded trees at the edge of a meadow; the light passes through the foliage and lays long bluish shadows on yellow and green grass. The touch is short and flat, and the canvas shows its weave. Between the trunks, on the right, a white wall can be made out. Date, dimensions and location are not established. The photograph was supplied by the house; its provenance is not documented.
