Biography

Trained at the Mark Hopkins Institute School of Fine Arts in San Francisco and then at the Académie Julian in Paris from 1888, he became a regular illustrator for Scribner’s Magazine and an author-illustrator of travel books. Elected to the National Academy of Design in 1909, he was an official war artist with the American army in spring 1918, then director of the Paris Art Training Center. From 1923 he headed the mural painting department of the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design in New York.

Giverny

He lived in France from 1888 to 1914, with a two-year interruption in New York. No known document attests to a stay in Giverny; he was a friend of Theodore Robinson, a central figure of the colony.
