Biography

Born on 3 March 1867 in San Gabriel, California, Guy Rose studied at the San Francisco Art Institute from 1885 to 1888, then enrolled at the Académie Julian in Paris on 12 September 1888, under Benjamin-Constant and Jules Lefebvre. He suffered repeated bouts of lead poisoning, which eventually forced him to give up oil painting and turn to illustration; he returned permanently to Los Angeles in 1914 and died in Pasadena on 17 November 1925.

Giverny

His presence in Giverny predates his settling there: the Terra Foundation for American Art dates Giverny Hillside to about 1890-1891, shortly after he enrolled at the Académie Julian. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art then places his move in 1904, “to a house and garden near those of Claude Monet”; it was there that his Impressionist manner took shape, and the musée des impressionnismes Giverny counts him among the colony's long-term residents. By his maturity he belongs to the post-1900 generation, that of Frieseke and Miller, but he had seen the village long before it.

Relation with the Hôtel Baudy

No source consulted places him at the Hôtel Baudy. His first stay, around 1890-1891, nonetheless falls within the years covered by the surviving guest register — 1887 to 1899 — which could therefore settle the question; consulting it remains to be done. He is presented here as a painter of Giverny, not as an attested lodger.
