Biography
A pupil of Saint-Gaudens and then of the École des beaux-arts in Paris, Frederick William MacMonnies became one of the most commissioned American sculptors of his generation, before also devoting himself to painting.
Giverny
A sculptor before he was a painter, he settled in Giverny in 1898 with Mary Fairchild in the former priory, bought in 1901. In 1905 he opened a summer studio-school there which drew young American artists, making Le Prieuré one of the colony’s two poles, alongside the Hôtel Baudy.
Relation with the Hôtel Baudy
His settling in Giverny is documented, but no known document attests to a stay at the Hôtel Baudy.
