Biography
William Howard Hart was born in 1863 and died in 1934. Trained at the Art Students League of New York and then at the Académie Julian, he later rented a house next to Theodore Earl Butler’s at Giverny. His date of death is not settled: Carol Lowrey herself writes “Died 1934 (or 1937?)”, and the Terra Foundation gives 1937. We retain 1934 and note the doubt.
Giverny
At Giverny, in 1897, he painted the portrait of his friend Theodore Earl Butler. That same year Butler painted his: “Portrait of the Artist, William Howard Hart, Giverny”, Hart seated on a balcony, playing cards on a table. The two canvases answer one another.
Relation with the Hôtel Baudy
A single line, but a clear one: “Hart Wm. H., 25 ans, New York, 21–26 septembre 1889”. Five days.
