Biography

Karl Anderson was born at Oxford, Ohio, in 1874 and died at Westport, Connecticut, in 1956. The Smithsonian American Art Museum holds a photograph of him from the Peter A. Juley & Son collection.

Giverny

He stayed at Giverny several times between 1909 and 1911, in Frederick Carl Frieseke’s circle. He belongs to the colony’s second generation, which found the village already settled in its reputation.

Relation with the Hôtel Baudy

In 1910 he painted the hotel’s tennis court: spectators in the shade, a match, flowering shrubs. No other known work names the house in its title. His stay falls after the years covered by the surviving guest register.
