Biography
Trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and then at the École des beaux-arts in Paris in Charles Gleyre’s studio, he went on to Meissonier’s private atelier. Settled in France after 1872, he specialised in scenes of peasant women out of doors, painted from models posing in a glass studio and outside, in an academic manner that idealises rural life. Silver medal and the cross of the Légion d’honneur at the 1889 Exposition Universelle.
