Paul Charles Chocarne-Moreau

A pupil of Tony Robert-Fleury and William Bouguereau at the École des beaux-arts in Paris, he belonged to the academic Salon tradition. He exhibited there regularly from 1882, won a second-class medal in 1900 and was made a chevalier of the Légion d’honneur in 1906. His speciality was the Parisian genre scene — baker’s boys, chimney sweeps, choirboys, schoolchildren — in a smooth, narrative handling far removed from the Impressionist touch. His date of death is given as either 1930 or 1931 depending on the source.
