Biography
Pierre Maubert was born at Vernon in 1884 and died there in 1957. He painted his town and its valley: the Seine, its banks, its boats, its bathers. The Vernon museum — today the musée Blanche Hoschedé-Monet — holds several of his canvases and devoted an exhibition to him, “Pierre Maubert et Vernon”, from 16 March to 30 April 2004.
Around Giverny
Four kilometres separate his easel from Monet’s, and a generation: when Maubert was born, Monet had been at Giverny for a year. He did not follow him; he carried on the country. Where Monet made the water a laboratory, Maubert looked at it as it served — boats are loaded, people bathe, the bridge is crossed. The museum notes that his boats are those of the early-century Seine valley, at the very time of the Water Lilies. No source consulted establishes a relation between the two men: what they share is a river.
