Photographic study: woman sewing in the garden
Study photograph by Theodore Robinson: the model, unidentified, poses seated in the garden, sewing a piece of white cloth. Robinson photographed his subjects in order to transfer them at full scale onto the canvas. The collection links this series to the paintings “The Potato Harvest”, “In the Garden” and “The Layette” — the last of these, held at the National Gallery of Art, repeats this pose exactly. The date proposed follows that of the paintings it served to compose.
