The painted fireplace and the surviving fireplace

Comparison plate assembled by the association: on the right, a detail of Willard Metcalf’s “The Ten Cent Breakfast” (1887), in which two diners sit beside a lit fireplace; on the left, a photograph of the same fireplace as it survives in the house today, taken through a pane of glass. The purpose is to locate within the building the exact places the painters depicted. The painting is held at the Denver Art Museum, inv. 1974.418.
