Handwritten tonic-wine recipe
Manuscript leaf in ink, headed “Vin fortifiant”, its edges eaten away. The formula combines cinchona wood, camomile, gentian, bitter orange peel and sugar candy, infused in wine and then in brandy. The Peers de Nieuwburgh collection takes the notebook to be that of the young landlady “in her thirties”: Angélina Baudy having been born in 1853, that places its use between 1883 and 1892.
